AI & LLM Engineering
Vector Databases Learning Resources [2026]
Vector databases exist because of a limitation baked into every LLM: it has a fixed context window and no memory of your company's documents, code, or customer records unless you hand them over at inference time. That handing-over problem is retrieval, and starting around 2021–2022, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) turned it into a category of its own — store your documents as embeddings, then pull back whatever is semantically closest to a query in milliseconds, no matter how differently it's worded. The field settled fast into a few clear lanes: Pinecone if you want managed and production-ready without touching infrastructure, Weaviate if you want open-source and schema-first, Qdrant if you're optimising for raw performance and don't mind Rust under the hood, Chroma for local-first prototyping, and pgvector if you're already running PostgreSQL and don't need billion-scale search — which, honestly, describes most teams, and makes pgvector the pragmatic default rather than the compromise it sounds like. By 2025 there wasn't a production RAG pipeline without one of these somewhere in the stack, which is exactly why this has become core AI-infrastructure knowledge rather than a niche specialty.
- ✓RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) has become the standard pattern for grounding LLMs in enterprise data — virtually every production AI application that answers questions about documents, codebases, or databases uses a vector store. This is now unavoidable infrastructure knowledge.
- ✓Vector search is not limited to LLM applications — it underpins recommendation systems, image search, duplicate detection, and anomaly detection. The skill transfers across every domain that involves finding similar items at scale.
- ✓pgvector has made vector storage accessible without new infrastructure — teams using PostgreSQL can add semantic search to existing applications with a single extension, making this a practical skill for backend engineers, not just ML specialists.
- ✓The tooling is converging: Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, and Chroma all have Python SDKs that follow similar patterns, and LangChain/LlamaIndex abstract over them. Learning the underlying concepts once means switching providers is a configuration change, not a re-implementation.

PaidPaul Iusztin, Maxime Labonne · Packt
The most complete treatment of vector databases in a production LLM context — covers embedding generation, vector store integration, RAG pipeline design, and evaluation as part of a full LLM engineering workflow.
View bookRelevant Search
PaidDoug Turnbull, John Berryman · Manning
The best book on why search results rank the way they do — written for Solr/Elasticsearch but the relevance-tuning mental model (query understanding, boosting, signal blending) applies directly to hybrid dense/sparse retrieval in modern vector stacks.
View bookIntroduction to Information Retrieval
PaidChristopher Manning, Prabhakar Raghavan, Hinrich Schütze · Cambridge University Press
The classical IR textbook that every modern vector search technique is built on top of — inverted indexes, tf-idf, vector space models, evaluation metrics. Dense embeddings changed the representation, not the underlying retrieval theory this book teaches.
