R Learning Resources [2026]

R was built by two statisticians, Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland, who wanted an open-source alternative to S — and it ended up outliving the thing it was cloning. Academic statistics and biostatistics never left it: if you're reading a paper with any real statistical modelling in it, there's a good chance the code behind the numbers is R. What changed the ceiling on who could use it was the tidyverse, Hadley Wickham's project to turn R's often-idiosyncratic base syntax into a coherent, readable data-science toolkit — suddenly R was approachable for analysts who never thought of themselves as programmers, not just statisticians comfortable with matrix notation. That's still R's core strength: statistical modelling, visualisation, and reproducible research workflows that a non-engineer can actually maintain. It isn't trying to be Python. It doesn't need to be.

  • ✓For statisticians and researchers, R is not optional — it is the language of the field. The majority of new statistical methods are first implemented as R packages on CRAN. If you are working in biostatistics, epidemiology, ecology, or quantitative social science, R proficiency is a baseline expectation.
  • ✓ggplot2 remains the gold standard for publication-quality statistical graphics. No other tool — Python, Tableau, or otherwise — matches the expressiveness and control of the grammar of graphics for exploratory data analysis. Data scientists who learn ggplot2 stop settling for mediocre charts.
  • ✓R Markdown and Quarto enable fully reproducible research documents that mix prose, code, and output. The reproducibility crisis in science has made this increasingly valued: journals, research teams, and data science teams all benefit from workflows where results can be regenerated from source.
