Backend & Infrastructure
Pulumi Learning Resources [2026]
Pulumi brings infrastructure as code into general-purpose languages: you define cloud resources in TypeScript, Python, Go, or C#, with real loops, functions, types, and unit tests instead of a domain-specific language. It uses the same provider ecosystem as Terraform (so it can manage anything Terraform can) but replaces HCL with code your IDE understands. That design has made it the IaC of choice for platform engineering teams building internal developer platforms — where infrastructure definitions become reusable, typed component libraries rather than copy-pasted modules. Terraform's 2023 licence change to BUSL pushed more teams to evaluate alternatives, and Pulumi (alongside OpenTofu) captured much of that motion. It remains smaller than Terraform in raw job counts, but it clusters in exactly the platform-engineering roles where IaC skill is most valued.
- ✓Pulumi turns infrastructure into software engineering — typed resource definitions, abstraction via components, and unit tests against mocked clouds. Engineers from application backgrounds become productive in IaC far faster than with HCL.
- ✓Platform engineering teams building internal developer platforms increasingly standardise on Pulumi because component libraries in TypeScript/Python compose the way DSL modules never quite do — and platform engineering is the fastest-growing branch of DevOps hiring.
- ✓Terraform knowledge transfers almost 1:1 (same providers, same plan/apply model, same state concepts), so learning Pulumi effectively gives you two IaC tools — and positions you well for shops migrating off BUSL-licensed Terraform.
- ✓Pulumi's automation API lets you embed infrastructure provisioning inside applications — the pattern behind SaaS products that spin up per-customer cloud resources, a capability plain Terraform cannot cleanly offer.

Infrastructure as Code (3rd Edition)
PaidKief Morris · O'Reilly
No dedicated Pulumi book exists yet, so the honest move is the tool-agnostic IaC classic. Morris covers the design principles — immutable infrastructure, environment parity, testing pipelines — that a Pulumi program should implement regardless of which language you write it in.

PaidYevgeniy Brikman · O'Reilly
From the author of Terraform: Up & Running — covers IaC concepts, deployment pipelines, and orchestration in a tool-agnostic way with worked examples. The conceptual grounding that makes any IaC tool (Pulumi included) make sense.

Since Pulumi and Terraform share the same provider ecosystem, plan/apply model, and state concepts, this is effectively a Pulumi concepts book with different syntax. Read it for the state management and module/component design chapters — the hard lessons transfer almost 1:1.
