Postman & API Testing Learning Resources [2026]

Postman began as a REST client and grew into the default platform for the whole API lifecycle: designing endpoints against OpenAPI specs, organising requests into shareable collections, writing JavaScript test assertions, mocking services before they exist, and running automated suites in CI with Newman or the Postman CLI. "Send me the Postman collection" is how APIs change hands between teams, vendors, and candidates in take-home interviews. The skill generalises beyond one tool — cURL, HTTPie, Bruno, and Insomnia cover similar ground, and the durable knowledge is API testing itself: auth flows (OAuth 2.0, JWT), status-code semantics, contract testing, and environment management. For QA engineers API test automation is a core competency; for backend developers it's assumed; for solutions engineers and technical support it's often the single most-used tool of the day.

  • ✓API testing is listed in the majority of QA engineering and backend job postings, and Postman is its lingua franca — interviews routinely include "walk me through testing this endpoint", and fluency with collections, environments, and test scripts answers it convincingly.
  • ✓Automated API tests are the highest-value layer of the testing pyramid for service-oriented systems — faster than E2E, more realistic than unit tests — and teams that wire Postman/Newman suites into CI catch integration breaks that unit coverage misses.
  • ✓The auth-flow knowledge that API testing forces on you (OAuth 2.0 grants, JWT structure, API keys, HMAC signing) is exactly the material that trips up engineers in production debugging and system design interviews alike.
  • ✓API-first development — designing and mocking APIs before implementation — is how modern platform teams work, and Postman's spec-driven workflow is the most common way that practice is actually executed.

API Testing and Development with Postman

Paid

Dave Westerveld · Packt

Intermediate

The best book-form treatment — combines testing theory (what to assert, how to design suites) with Postman execution, including contract testing and workflow automation. Good for engineers who want testing craft, not just tool clicks.

RESTful Web APIs

Paid

Leonard Richardson, Mike Amundsen, Sam Ruby · O'Reilly

Intermediate

Broadens past Postman into the API design theory that determines whether there is anything good to test — hypermedia, resource modelling, and why most "REST" APIs aren't. Read this to understand what a well-designed endpoint looks like before you script assertions against it.

Designing Web APIs

Paid

Brenda Jin, Saurabh Sahni, Amir Shevat · O'Reilly

Intermediate

Written by Slack platform engineers with case studies from Stripe, Facebook, and GitHub — covers API-first design, versioning, and developer experience decisions that shape what you end up testing and documenting in Postman collections.
