Playwright Learning Resources [2026]
Playwright was built by the team that created Puppeteer. It tests real browsers — Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit — with a single API, automatic waiting, and network interception built in. Its trace viewer lets you replay test runs step by step, making debugging e2e failures far less painful. Playwright is rapidly displacing Cypress in larger engineering organisations.
- ✓Playwright is the fastest-growing e2e testing tool in 2024–2025. Microsoft uses it to test VSCode and Edge; companies like Slack, GitHub, and Google have adopted it for browser automation. SDET and QA roles now frequently list it as a requirement alongside or instead of Cypress.
- ✓Cross-browser testing is genuinely different with Playwright. Running the same test suite against Chrome, Firefox, and Safari in parallel — catching real browser compatibility bugs before users do — is straightforward. Cypress only recently added limited Firefox support; Playwright has had it since v1.
- ✓The Playwright test runner generates detailed HTML reports and a trace viewer that captures a screenshot, network log, and DOM snapshot at every step. This makes debugging CI failures far faster than parsing log output.
- ✓Playwright supports TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, and .NET — so the framework travels with you across languages. For automation engineers, Python + Playwright is a powerful combination that opens doors beyond pure frontend work.

Hands-On Automated Testing with Playwright: Create fast, reliable, and scalable tests for modern web apps with Microsoft's automation framework
PaidFaraz K. Kelhini & Butch Mayhew · Packt
The most current Playwright book on the market, covering accessibility testing, visual regression, and AI-assisted test generation alongside the core API. Written by working automation engineers, which shows in the CI and flakiness-debugging chapters.
View bookPractical Playwright Test: Next-Generation Web Testing and Automation
PaidJean-François Greffier · Apress
Focuses specifically on the Playwright Test runner rather than the whole ecosystem — fixtures, parallelization, and writing custom reporters. A good second book once you've outgrown the official getting-started guide.
View bookWeb Automation Testing Using Playwright: End-to-end, API, accessibility, and visual testing using Playwright
PaidKailash Pathak · BPB Publications
A compressed beginner-to-intermediate pass over the same four testing modes — e2e, API, accessibility, visual — than the Packt title. A cheaper first book if you want a printed reference rather than pure docs.
