PHP Learning Resources [2026]

PHP got the web dynamic before almost anything else did — Rasmus Lerdorf built it in 1994 to make dropping live content into HTML trivial, and the rest of the internet just started using it. The reputation problem is real: PHP has spent decades as the language developers love to mock. But WordPress runs on it, and WordPress powers a substantial share of the web — that's not a niche, that's infrastructure. Laravel did more to fix the reputation than anything else, wrapping PHP in a framework expressive enough to make its developer experience a genuine rival to Rails. PHP 8.x closed the technical gap too — union types, fibers, attributes, JIT compilation — code that looks nothing like the PHP of 2010 that earned the jokes in the first place.

  • ✓WordPress alone creates an enormous and stable job market. Every agency, media company, and local business running WordPress needs PHP developers for theme customisation, plugin development, and performance work. This market is less glamorous but consistently liquid — PHP jobs rarely go unfilled for long.
  • ✓Laravel is a genuinely excellent framework with a rich ecosystem — Livewire for reactive UIs without JavaScript, Sanctum and Passport for API authentication, Horizon for queue management. Teams choosing Laravel get to move fast without sacrificing structure.
  • ✓PHP runs on shared hosting without Docker or complex deployment pipelines, making it accessible for freelancers and agencies serving budget-conscious clients. For a solo developer building client sites, knowing PHP is still one of the fastest paths to billable work.
