Web Framework
Flask Learning Resources [2026]
Flask is a small Python web framework. The core does a few things: it maps URLs to functions, renders Jinja templates, handles requests and sessions, and ships a test client and a command-line interface. It sits on top of Werkzeug (the WSGI toolkit) and Jinja. It does not pick a database, a form library or an authentication scheme for you. You add those through extensions such as Flask-SQLAlchemy and Flask-Login, or with plain libraries. That makes the first app short and the later decisions yours. Blueprints and the application-factory pattern are how a Flask project grows past a single file. If Django is the framework with the decisions made, Flask is the one where you make them.
- ✓Flask's core is small enough to read and understand end to end: routes, request and response objects, sessions, templates. That makes it a good way to learn how a Python web app actually works.
- ✓Because the database layer, forms and authentication are extensions, you practise the real skills: wiring SQLAlchemy models, handling sessions and login, and structuring an app with blueprints.
- ✓Flask ships a test client and a documented testing guide, so you can write route-level tests with pytest from your first project.
- ✓Flask runs on any WSGI server. Learning to deploy it behind a production server such as Gunicorn or Waitress teaches deployment steps that carry over to other Python web apps.
