Platform

.NET Learning Resources [2026]

.NET is the platform, not the language and not the web framework. It is a runtime that executes compiled code, a base class library, an SDK with the `dotnet` command-line tool, and the NuGet package system that ties it together. C# is the language most people write on it (F# and Visual Basic also run on it). ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework Core, Blazor and .NET MAUI are layers built on top. Modern .NET runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, ships in container images, and is open source. Learn the platform first and every layer above it gets easier: how a project is structured, how packages resolve, how the built-in dependency injection container and configuration system work, how an app is tested, and how it is published.

  • ✓One platform covers web APIs, background services, console tools, desktop and mobile apps. The project system, CLI and package manager are the same across all of them.
  • ✓The generic host, dependency injection, configuration and logging libraries are shared. The same patterns appear in every kind of .NET app, so you learn them once.
  • ✓The `dotnet` CLI builds, tests, packs and publishes without an IDE. That makes .NET straightforward to run in CI pipelines and Linux containers.
  • ✓Official documentation and free Microsoft Learn training are maintained by the platform team and cover the whole stack, so you can learn it without paying for anything.
