Web Fundamentals
CSS Learning Resources [2026]
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) describes how HTML elements look and where they sit on the page. Rules select elements and set properties; when rules conflict, the cascade decides the winner by origin, specificity and source order. Every element generates a box, and the box model (content, padding, border, margin) governs its size and spacing. Layout is handled by Flexbox for one-dimensional rows and columns, and Grid for two-dimensional layouts. Responsive design means the same page adapts to different viewport sizes, using media queries and, more recently, container queries. Custom properties give CSS variables, and cascade layers (@layer) let you control which groups of rules take precedence. Frameworks and utility libraries compile down to the same CSS, so the fundamentals carry over to all of them.
- ✓Every web UI ends up as CSS in the browser. React, Vue, Svelte and Tailwind all produce it, and debugging them means reading it.
- ✓Flexbox and Grid are built into the language. Most common layouts need no framework, just a few declarations.
- ✓Custom properties, container queries and cascade layers are documented features of CSS itself. They replace workarounds that used to need preprocessors or JavaScript.
- ✓Understanding the cascade and specificity is what separates fixing a style bug in a minute from fighting it for an hour.
