Shell Scripting
Bash Learning Resources [2026]
Bash is the language of the infrastructure, usually written by someone who needed a thing done right now. It powers CI/CD pipelines, deployment scripts, data pipelines, system administration, and the ten-line helper scripts that quietly run on production servers for years after their author has moved on. Its syntax is famously hostile (try remembering $() vs backtick substitution vs ${} on command). But Bash is everywhere — in every GitHub Actions workflow, every Dockerfile's RUN command, every cron job on every Linux server. Not learning it doesn't make it go away. It makes it opaque, and you'll spend the rest of your career occasionally blocked by something you can't read.
- ✓Shell scripting fluency is expected across DevOps, SRE, and platform engineering roles — gaps here create friction in daily work even at junior levels.
- ✓Enables you to automate repetitive infrastructure tasks, write CI/CD pipeline scripts, and manage servers without reaching for a heavier language or tool.
- ✓Required to effectively use Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS CLI — each relies on shell commands for setup, configuration, and debugging.
- ✓Strong Bash skills noticeably accelerate debugging in production: reading logs with grep/awk/sed and writing one-off diagnostic scripts are daily SRE and backend tasks.
