Android Development Learning Resources [2026]

Android development means writing apps that run on the Android operating system and distributing them, mostly, through Google Play. Google documents Kotlin as the language to start with, Android Studio as the official IDE, and Jetpack Compose as its declarative toolkit for building UI. Around those sit the Jetpack libraries (ViewModel, Navigation, Room, WorkManager and others) and Google's guidance on app architecture. The platform has a lot of surface area: lifecycles, permissions, background work, many screen sizes. The good news is that the official material is unusually complete and free. The Android Basics with Compose course and the codelabs take a beginner from a first app to data persistence and networking without a paid tool.

  • ✓Google's own courses, codelabs and sample code are written in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose. Learning the current official path means the documentation and your code agree.
  • ✓The platform skills transfer: lifecycle handling, state management, unidirectional data flow and layered architecture are the same ideas you meet in any serious client app.
  • ✓The whole toolchain is free. Android Studio, the emulator, the official courses and the docs cost nothing, and Google Play is the publishing route for finished apps.
  • ✓Android apps still exist in two UI worlds, the older View system and Compose. Knowing both, and how they interoperate, is what lets you work on existing codebases as well as new ones.
