What makes it work

A breakdown of the choices that make this portfolio stand out.

1

Fintech industry specialisation as a premium signal

Monzo and Pleo — where he worked in-house as product designer and senior product designer — are credibility anchors specific to financial services design, with Mastercard among the brands he lists working with. Two in-house fintech roles position Bryn for a segment of the market (neobanks, payments, wealth management) that pays above-average design rates and has genuine complexity.

2

White space used as a layout decision, not a lack of content

Generous margins and line spacing are themselves a design statement. For a UX designer applying to companies that care about visual craft, a compressed, cluttered portfolio is a disqualifying signal before a single case study is read.

3

Typography as the primary design tool

There are no gradients, no drop shadows, no decoration. Typography hierarchy alone does all the work. This level of restraint signals a designer who understands that good design solves problems rather than expressing personality.

What UX Designers can take from this

Specific, actionable tips to apply to your own portfolio — no generic advice.

  • Specialise in a vertical: fintech, healthcare, or enterprise software. Depth in one sector commands more than breadth across three.

  • White space is a design decision. Resist the urge to fill every section — let your case studies breathe.

  • Name clients when possible. "Fintech clients including Monzo and Mastercard" is more powerful than "projects for financial services companies."

  • Typography mastery is the fastest way to elevate a portfolio. Invest time in type scale, line height, and measure before adding any other visual element.

  • Interaction design samples (even short Protopie or Figma prototype links) show that your work lives in motion, not just in static frames.

Case studies

Each case study pairs a short Overview with a spec sheet that counts the team by role — Monzo's credit score lists 1 × product manager and 6 × engineers — then runs a lean Process and Outcome. Bryn Taylor shows the crew, the constraint (iOS 14 breaking Pleo's invite-to-app handoff), and a result stated without inflation.

Pleo: Onboarding Employees In-App

Product StrategyUser ResearchProduct DesigniOS

Pleo's product was built mostly for web, but employees could only create their account there — a mixed message when the team wanted day-to-day use on mobile. Bryn's team (1 × product manager, 1 × product designer, 3 × engineers) moved account creation fully into the app, starting from the admin's email invite. The hard part: iOS 14 security changes meant the app couldn't carry the invitee's details through the App Store download, so on arrival Pleo couldn't tell who the person was or that they came from an invite.

It names the three metrics the team was watching (app downloads within 30 days, adoption of core expense features, customer-service tickets in the first 30 days) and a platform constraint that forced a trade-off — an extra verification step, designed with PM and engineering to also satisfy strong customer authentication (SCA). That is the reasoning a fintech product-design interview probes for.

  • Spec sheet counts the team by role: 1 × PM, 1 × product designer, 3 × engineers

  • iOS 14 broke the invite-to-app handoff; the team accepted an extra verification step to keep onboarding fully in-app

  • Scoped deliberately: foundations first (get into the app, create an account), guided and contextual discovery deferred

  • Outcome stated plainly — a well-performing baseline, not an inflated metric

Monzo: Credit Scores Simplified

Product StrategyUser ResearchProduct DesignTransUnion data

A completely new Monzo product built over three months: checking your credit score in a few taps inside the app. The case study opens on the problem — half of UK adults have never checked their score — and credits a team of 1 × product manager, 2 × product designers, 6 × engineers, 1 × researcher and 1 × marketer. Monzo partnered with TransUnion for the data; the design work was repackaging TransUnion's raw information into something customers could understand and act on, with the effort focused on education.

Turning a third-party data feed into a consumer experience that explains itself is a core fintech design skill. The case study shows the whole team by role and a staged rollout (10,000 customers first), so Bryn's part reads as one role inside a real squad.

  • Built over three months with a 12-person cross-functional team, listed role by role

  • Started from a customer insight: people don't know what credit scores are or why they matter

  • First release to 10,000 customers; later rolled into Monzo Plus

Pleo: Per Diems That Scale Across Markets

Product StrategyUser ResearchProduct DesignMobile App

Pleo offered per diems (lump-sum travel allowances) only in Germany, and missing Swedish support was a common blocker for customers. Each country's rules differ, sometimes in opposite directions. With 1 × product manager, 1 × product designer and 2 × engineers, Bryn went back through the German flow, compared both markets' regulations, and stress-tested which parts of the interface broke or needed adapting, so the next market wouldn't mean another redesign.

Designing for regulatory variation is a large part of B2B fintech work. This case study shows systems thinking tied to one concrete constraint (two countries with conflicting rules), not a vague appeal to scalability.

  • Framed around a real commercial blocker: no Swedish per diem support

  • Stress-tested the existing German flow against both markets' regulations before redesigning

  • Built as a framework for future markets, not a one-off Sweden patch

  • Small team, stated by role: 1 × PM, 1 × designer, 2 × engineers

Kernel: Marketing Site Design and Webflow Build

WebflowWeb DesignDesign SystemsInteraction Design

Freelance design and Webflow build of the marketing site for Kernel, an early-stage startup making a Figma plugin that connects designs to real product APIs. Bryn started in February 2022 with a template and editorial styles for Kernel's long-form content. He then built on the existing identity and manifesto homepage (both by designer Zander Brade), set up a lightweight style system so global changes stayed easy, and focused on small interactions and animation for an audience of senior product designers.

It shows the freelance half of Bryn's work: slotting into a startup's existing Webflow setup, building on someone else's brand rather than replacing it, and delivering design and build together — a common ask for early-stage marketing sites.

  • Spec sheet: 1 × co-founder, 2 × product designers — credits the existing identity to Zander Brade

  • Began with an editorial template for long-form content before widening to the full site

  • Lightweight style system in Webflow so later global tweaks were easy

  • Designed for senior product designers, so detail and micro-interactions were part of the brief
