Cover letter principles
Three rules that apply regardless of role or level. Follow them and you are already ahead of most applicants.
Lead with outcomes, not experience
Hiring managers read dozens of letters that start with years of experience. Start with a metric — a conversion lift, a shipped model, a retention improvement — and you're already in the top 10% of applications.
One page. No exceptions.
A cover letter that runs to two pages signals poor editing judgment. Three to four tight paragraphs is the target. If you cannot cut it to one page, cut harder — every sentence should earn its place.
Tailor it to the specific role
Name a product, a feature, or a challenge you noticed. Generic letters are deleted. A letter that references the company's specific onboarding flow or recent engineering blog post shows you did the work before applying.
